We’re all looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment, cut back on fuel consumption and live a greener existence. From Brooklyn car share memberships to biodegradable packaging, sustainable lifestyle options are constantly improving. This is especially true in the world of transportation. When it comes to sustainable, low-carbon automotive options, hybrid vehicles and new electric models are attracting a ton of attention and changing the way we thinking about personal travel.
That being said, sustainable auto engineering is just one piece of a much larger puzzle that also includes alternative forms of transportation. From public transportation and improved cycling infrastructure to car shares and car pooling, the way we get from point A to point B is changing at a rapid pace.
Which leads us to an interesting dynamic. On one hand, we have car manufacturers attempting to improve vehicle efficiency in order to appeal to more conscious commuters, while at the same time ensure personal vehicle sales stay consistent. On the other, you have companies like Carpingo, who are trying to reduce the number of personal vehicles in use through a sustainable Brooklyn car share model. According to some studies, for every car shared, ten to fourteen vehicles are removed from the road. What’s more, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, 2009 was the first year car ownership numbers dropped significantly since record keeping began back in 1960.
So what’s it going to be? Join a Brooklyn car share and cut back on the number of vehicles on America’s roads, or invest in a hybrid or electric personal vehicle in order to reduce your impact?
Does it have to be one or the other – why can’t it be both?
That’s a question we’re seriously contemplating here are Carpingo. As Brooklyn’s only independent car share company, we’re constantly on the lookout for ways to improve our car share fleet and suite of membership offerings. Which means closely monitoring advancements in the electric automotive industry.
With that being said, incorporating electric vehicles into our growing car share fleet isn’t as easy as one might think. In fact, it’s quite complicated. For all of our members who are curious as to whether or not we’ll be charging up our fleet with alternative energy vehicles, the answer is… maybe. There are just a few roadblocks that we need to consider first.
Could Electric Vehicles Improve Car Sharing?
Electric vehicles are an attractive future expansion option for our Brooklyn car share for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, they’re ultra efficient and environmentally-friendly, two things we absolutely love here at our Brooklyn car share. Secondly, people want to learn more about them and are looking for ways to experience this futuristic form of personal travel. That being said, electric vehicles aren’t exactly designed with the sharing model in mind. Since Brooklyn car share vehicles are used sporadically, it’s difficult to assess just how often the vehicles will be left to charge between uses. What’s more, some of the spaces where our Carpingo Brooklyn cars are parked are leased rather than owned by our company. This makes it difficult for us to install charging infrastructure. Finally, user education is a major concern. While our current fleet of traditional Brooklyn car share vehicles are easy to book, retrieve, operate and return, there’d be a bit of a learning curve with some electric models. How do you charge them? How often do these vehicles need to be charged? Since the technology is so new, it would take our members some time to become familiar with the idiosyncrasies of this sort of transportation option.
Certainly not an impossible task, but one that takes time and consideration to implement.
With that being said, our current fleet of Brooklyn car share vehicles already contains some of the most efficient vehicles on the market. From the Chevy Spark and Fiat 500 to the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra, we’ve been very careful about which vehicles we integrate into our fleet. Curious as to where these vehicles are located in and around Brooklyn? Then check out our fleet listing and location map. Know of a vehicle that you think we should consider the next time we update our fleet? Then send us your recommendations and observations. We’re always eager to hear what our customers have to say!
